With our Parent Teacher Conferences fast approaching, it is important for students to set realistic goals for what they want to accomplish during their last few months as an elementary student! Students: Please use the Google Forms below to set 3 realistic goals for yourself. Be sure to explain how you plan to accomplish these goals. Parents,
5th grade math begins to gain serious momentum at this point in the school year. We have officially moved into fractions and operations. Starting this week we will begin adding and subtracting fractions and mixed numbers. There are a number of free apps available for students to use to help with this concept. Other websites that can be helpful are IXL Math and Fractions. Please check these out. As sports and activities begin again in the year there will be limited homework to ensure students have time for outside activities. It will be a good idea for your student to have some extra practice. Danica McKellar has written a new series of books for math and more information can be found at her website. When helping your child with homework please remember to be patient. Math has changed a lot since we were in school so let your student explain how they are learning the concept to you. Allowing your student to be the "expert" can do wonders for their self-confidence. Flu season is here and many of our students are falling victim to it. This week we had students missing school for many illnesses, including an emergency appendix removal! Be sure your student is getting lots of sleep and taking their vitamins.
January through the end of the school year is a roller coaster with many crazy stops along the way! We have already finished the Geography Bee with four representatives from our class. We have a number of incentive parties that are coming up that require all students to have all assignments turned in and have earned enough class money to attend. Help your student to stay organized. We often feel fifth graders should be responsible enough to "take care of it on their own," but please be an extra insurance policy for them! I hope all of my parents, families, students, and friends have had a wonderful Thanksgiving Break. As November is coming to a close and the Holiday Season begins it's full swing, please keep these things in mind:
If you are going out of town for the holidays and will be missing any school days, let me know as soon as possible! I know that the holidays are a wonderful time to see friends and family we cannot see on a regular basis so please enjoy your vacations but let me know so I can make necessary plans to help your student! The Revolutionary War Project will be due not long after Winter Break. If you have questions about this project or any others let me know, that is what I am here for! Be sure your student is planning accordingly to eliminate stress for you, your student, and me! This is an independent project, and a large one as well. Have fun with it! What an exciting year so far! Since the school year started we have had two important donorschoose.org projects funded and have two more live projects posted.
I cannot believe it is already Thanksgiving this week and I feel I have a lot to be thankful for! I moved to Salt Lake City from Nevada in the midst of mass layoffs of teachers and astronomical class sizes. As a college student all I heard was how parent involvement is non-existent. I have experienced nothing of the sort at Canyon View Elementary! I see parents in our school everyday and parents are willing to help in whatever capacity they can! I want to thank all of my parents for making sure that they sent a representative to parent-teacher conferences and wonderful conversations with all of you regarding their student's progress. As the school year progresses I cannot wait to see what other amazing things we have coming up this year! Thank you for all that you do for your child and their peers. I hope you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving! We officially have 11 iPods with cases and screens thanks to ZAGG inc.! The past few weeks we have been spending time working with the iPods and have even created podcasts for our math page. Check out the math page to see the first podcasts we have created! There will be many more to come and I look forward to implementing the podcasts throughout the curriculum!
How awesome are we? Within this past week we have earned FOUR (4) iPod Touch units!!!!!! These students are awesome. We have incorporated this project as a math lesson with division, percentage, decimals, word problems, etc. The students are so excited each time there is a new donation. Remember the code to match your donation is SPARK. Thank you for the fabulous support you have given the class. Please forward our Donor's Choose link to anyone you think may be interested. This is a great way to qualify for end of the year donations since this is a 501(c)(3) not for profit. Click here to go to the page and share the link.
Here are some videos that may help you with the test coming up in science!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9qwBfBugo_A What awesome students and parents we have in our class! All the students and parents made it to parent conferences. Thank you for taking the short survey and making it on time to your conference. The things that you do for your child are impressive to say the least. I would like to personally thank you for helping your child become accountable and still be your child's biggest advocate.
