Parents,
5th grade math begins to gain serious momentum at this point in the school year. We have officially moved into fractions and operations. Starting this week we will begin adding and subtracting fractions and mixed numbers. There are a number of free apps available for students to use to help with this concept. Other websites that can be helpful are IXL Math and Fractions. Please check these out. As sports and activities begin again in the year there will be limited homework to ensure students have time for outside activities. It will be a good idea for your student to have some extra practice.
Danica McKellar has written a new series of books for math and more information can be found at her website.
When helping your child with homework please remember to be patient. Math has changed a lot since we were in school so let your student explain how they are learning the concept to you. Allowing your student to be the "expert" can do wonders for their self-confidence.
